The Elegant wine tasting room at Valenzano Winery
Pine Barrens
Winery Tour

A beautiful summer day greeted guests as the Pine Barrens Winery Tour bus headed towardsThe sampling - guests of the Pine Barrens Winery Tour try to decide on their favorites from Valenzano's many varieties of wine. Shamong and Valenzano Winery for a buffet luncheon, wine tasting and vineyard tour. During the ride out, most were surprised to learn of the magic the Pine Barrens offers, and will be taking additional tours to see more, this fall! But the real surprise for this great group of people was Valenzano Winery, a small but elegant vineyard located on manicured grounds on Old Indian Mills Road.

This area of Tabernacle and Shamong (Indian Mills) is "FARM COUNTRY." Huge fields of corn, fruit trees, and other crops owned by Russo's Farm Market and others; horses, and of course grapevines, fringed the roadside as we neared Valenzano's. Once we arrived, we were greeted by the caterer, Barbara Russell of "Best of Show Catering" and her assistant Betsy; and Tony Valenzano Jr., whose father founded the winery. Ooo's and ahhh's were heard as we walked into the impeccably landscaped patio abloom with flowers. Inside the tasting house, our delicious buffet luncheon awaited us, as well as many varieties of wine - dry reds and whites, semi-sweet wines including both red and white cranberry wine, and dessert wines, for sampling at our leisure.

Tony Valenzano dissusses viticulture with visitors to Valenzano Winery in ShamongOnce everyone had their fill of delicious chicken salad-stuffed croissants, roast beef, tuna, and ham sandwiches, wonderful home-made potato salad, fresh fruit and a delectable cookie tray (to nibble on with the dessert wines, of course!), Tony escorted us to the nearby grapevines.

He explained viticulture and the painstaking work of tending the vines. Tony talked of the topsoil in the area - over 8 inches deep - that is so important in the vines' growth. He told us that the main insect to bother these vines is the Japanese Beetle, but they are more beneficial than not, since they eat the leaves. The holes left by the beetles allow more sunlight to filter to the grapes - more sunlight means sweeter grapes and better wine! Almost ready for harvest, these Chambourcin grapes look good enough to eat!

Tony's pride in the vineyard was apparent as he discussed his grapes and the resultant wines. It's easy to see that much love goes into every bunch of grapes, and tasting Valenzano's wonderful wines confirms it!

The Pine Barrens is becoming a popular tourist destination. It offers history, nature, boating, camping, fishing, swimming, and most of all, peace and tranquility. It's important to families who live here, whether for a few years or many generations, that our peace and tranquility be preserved.A local lawyer or doctor won't look any different than his neighbor who works the land. Thousand dollar suits aren't what impress people of the Pines - taking care of nature and fellow man is what matters. To that end, it is important for you to know that as a visitor to our precious Pine Barrens, you should show respect for the flora and fauna, for the historical buildings or their remains, and show respect for the "locals". Walk and drive gently. Treat our Pine Barrens as you would want a visitor to treat your own home town - and your own family. Thank you.
